Denim is een afkorting van de oorspronkelijke benaming serge de Nîmes. Nîmes is een Zuid-Franse stad waar deze stof voor het eerst werd vervaardigd door de familie André voor de veehoeders van de Camargue, de zogeheten gardians. De Blue jeans blauwe denim spijkerbroek dankt zijn naam aan de blauwe kleurstof indigo en jeans komt van de Franse benaming Gènes van Genua waar de eerste denim broeken werden vervaardigd.
